World
No Tobacco Day is globally observed every year on May 31 to draw
attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative
health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each
year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers
being exposed to second-hand smoke. This yearly celebration informs the
public on the dangers of using tobacco, the business practices of
tobacco companies, what organisations all over the world are doing to
fight the tobacco companies and the tobacco epidemic, and what people
around the world can do to claim their right to health and healthy
living and to protect future generations.
The World No Tobacco Day events held in various cities were:
Mumbai:
The famous Bollywood trio Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy performed for CPAA
at a special concert held on 12 June in Mumbai. Singers Aakriti Kakkar,
Shruti Pathak , Mamta Sharma, Aditi Singh Sharma, Raman Mahadevan,
Sandeep Batraa, Divya Kumar and Shadab Faridi accompanied them
beautifully with their vocals. The performers used the platform to urge
the youth to 'Celebrate Life...Don't let it go up in Smoke !". The show
was inaugurated by actress Neetu Chandra, Mrs World Mohini Sharma Mane
and Mr. Mayak Mehta(Executive Director, Bank of Baroda) along-with Mr Y
K Sapru (Chairman and CEO). A Press Conference preceding the concert on
11 June announced CPAA's collaborative efforts with World Health
Organization, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in put together
various programs involving the music industry, advertising agencies,
youth, corporate, celebrities, media and like-minded influential people
to highlight the ill effects of tobacco in tandem with the theme for
2016 being 'Get Ready for Plain Packaging - a deglamorizing of cigarette
packaging with relevant messages to act as deterrent to smoking habit '.
Present at the Press Conference were Mr. Y K Sapru (Chairman & CEO-CPAA),
Dr. Prakin Suchaxaya (CHP, WHO), Mr. Harish Baijal (Jt.Commissioner
FDA-Maharashtra), Mr. O K Kaul (General Manager-Marketing & Wealth
Management, Bank Of Baroda),Dr. P S Pasricha (Former DGP of Maharashtra),
producer-director Mr. Rohit Shetty (Director & Producer), music
composers Shankar Ehsaan Loy (Singer-Composer)and actor and CPAA patron
Vivek Oberoi to pledge their support to the cause. They also felicitated
singers from music industry for their support to CPAA.
Cancer Screening Camps were held on 22 May at the Zilla Parishad School,
Safale, Palghar for 100 women.
A helicopter joy-ride over Mumbai city, was organised for childhood
cancer patients on 31 May by Pawan Hans Helicopter Ltd from their
airport in Juhu, Mumbai. Actresses Juhi Chawla, Urmila Matondar, Medha
Manjrekar and Bhagyshree were present to cheer the children, distribute
gifts and accompany them.
New Delhi:
An Anti Tobacco Awareness program was organised for the Delhi Police on
31 May at the Lotus Temple Auditorium. Over 400 police personnel of
South East District Delhi attended the lecture which focused on the
harmful effects of tobacco use and the perils of second-hand smoking. Dr
Ankur Bahl and Dr Sajeela Maini's talks enlightened them about the
causes, myths and warning signs of cancer and brief information and data
on oral, head and neck cancer. The doctors emphasized on the need
for regular health check-ups, how to quit tobacco and different methods to
do so. A cancer screening camp was organised on 30 May for the police personnel of Sarita Vihar Police Station. While several cases of chewing tobacco,
smoking and poor oral hygiene were identified and they were counseled
and suggested to quit tobacco and taught to take care of their dental
health. 15 cases with precancerous stage were detected.
Pune:
Cancer Screening Camps were conducted throughout the month of May
at the GPO Pune, Magarpatta City, Yerwada Central Jail and for a Women's
Self Help Group at Wagholi. Awareness lectures were held through the
month at Magarpatta City by Dr. Mahesh Pawar at Yerwada Central Jail by
Dr. Rakesh Neve and Dr. Vinod Gore.
Other events held in May were:
A Patient-donor meet was organised for one of CPAA's biggest patrons the
General Insurance Corporation on 11 May at their head office in Churchgate, Mumbai. 25 beneficiary patients along-with a relative were
treated to an enjoyable evening by their General Manager and the staff
members. The staff also distributed gifts to all the patients.
On 22 May a lunch meet was organised at Grand Hyatt Hotel, Juhu by one
of CPAA's esteemed donor Sudha Sharma for 150 childhood cancer patients
from Tata, Sion, Wadia and KEM hospitals along-with their parents. The
children were excited to meet actor Tiger Shroff and singers Arman
Mallik and Swarup and thoroughly enjoyed the magic show, clown show and
puppet show with them. They danced to their hearts content with the
celebrities present and went home happily after having a delicious lunch
and return gifts.
Dr.
Reeta Kaul Thukral of the Global Charity Foundation, USA met up with the
patients and parents that GCF has been supporting for cancer treatment
since 2011 under CPAA-GCF project. The meet was held at AIIMS, Delhi in
June 2016.
A Cancer Screening camp was organized for the under privileged community
of Sangam Vihar, the biggest slum colony in Delhi on 28 June.
The Oriental Insurance Corporation of India invited CPAA and 8 of their
beneficiary childhood cancer patients on 9 June 2016 at Jewel of India
Hotel, Worli, Mumbai. The directors and staff of the organisation
interacted with the children and their parents and enjoyed a delicious
lunch with them. The children were thrilled to receive all the lovely
gifts too. |
