'Reaching the stars '

Reaching the stars, a celebrity fundraising dinner was hosted by CPAA on 9 January at the Crystal Room, Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai. The highlight of the evening was a fashion show by Kimaya choreographed by Marc Robinson. 20 Childhood cancer patients were the star-models, who were accompanied by celebrities Jagjit Singh, Talat Aziz, Shobha De, Mumbai Sheriff Indu Shahani, Diana Hayden, Zayed Khan, Madhur Bhandarkar, Waluscha & Marc Robinson, Shekhar & Adhyayan Suman, Sonu Sood, Mahima Chaudhary, Preeti Jhangiani, Sonal Chauhan and Ronit Roy. The programme also included an art auction of works by renowned artists like Arzan Khambatta, Julius Mackwan, Karl Antao, Pratul Dash, Rajendra Kapse, Sanjeev Sonpimpare, Sunil Padwal and Yusuf Arakkal. CPAA's Susmita Mitra coordinated the events in association with Bina Aziz from Tradition Art and Madhuri Bala from Zoom.

Mumbai:

The Smoke-Free Mumbai Campaign held a brain storming meeting to plan further stategy on tobacco control at Tata Memorial Hospital on 8 January. Drs Shubha Maudgal & Shital Raval attended the evening and presented CPAA's current tobacco-control projects. This was followed by the National AFTC Consultation meet on Tobacco Control. The group met to plan the 2nd National Tobacco Control Conference. CPAA is member of the organising committee.Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2010 - Shailja Singh, Mr. Y. K. Cancer awareness lectures were conducted for corporates, Birla SunLife in Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai; for IDBI Fortis, Gitanjali and DG Sanghvi College Mumbai. A lecture was organised in Gujarati for the Dhanera Jain Samaj by Usha and Shital Raval on 10 January. Awareness lectures were delivered in schools at Sion, Juhu, Borivali and Shirpur as a part of our ongoing study to assess the best way to motivate school children to stop smoking and/or not start.

CPAA participated in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2010 held on 17 January. Several companies like Kotak Bank, Axis Foundation, Citibank, Nomura, Coral Hub and State Bank of India supported CPAA in the corporate challenge. Noted film actress Tara Sharma participated in the dream run and raised pledges in support of CPAA. Mr. Y.K. Sapru and Shailja Singh were present during the run to cheer participants.

Childhood cancer patients in the ING SamratChildhood cancer patients were invited to visit and celebrated the first anniversary of ING Samrat on 25 January. The ship sailed 70 km into the deep sea from the Mumbai shores, while the children enjoyed the games, music and lunch. CPAA's Neeta More made sure that this was a truly memorable experience for these brave children battling cancer.

On 30 January a get together for patients and their siblings was organised at Rosemary & Thyme. Around 30 children attended. All the children participated in the games and the drawing competition. Mr.Prasad Panvelkar of Lions Club Prathna Samaj judged the competition.

Dr Shubha Maugal at the Reliance Life Sciences & Carcinogeneis Foundation ConferenceCPAA co-hosted a 3-day conference on Carcinogenesis with Reliance Life Sciences & Carcinogeneis Foundation from
5th - 7th February. Dr Shubha Maugal was a key note speaker on Breast cancer in India and Dr Shital Raval talked about the role of NGOs in the Public Health Care.

The Terry Fox run was flagged off on 14 February at Nariman Point, Mumbai by Judith Fox (sister of Terry Fox) and Breeda McClew (Executive Director at Terry Fox). Almost 10,000 school children participated in the annual run, which was followed by a brunch at Trident attended by committee members Piali Syam and Shital Raval.

CPAA's long-time patron and well-wisher Soma Vajpayee participated in the Standard Chartered Hongkong Marathon on 28 February. CPAA benefited from the funds raised from the pledges.

Pune Branch

As part of the Make A Cancer Patient Smile program in Pune, 30 patients were taken for the movie '3 Idiots' on 9 January and 45 patients were taken to see the Marathi movie 'Natrang' on 11 February.

CPAA Pune in collaboration with Inlaks and Budhrani Cancer Unit celebrated the World Cancer Day on 4 February. About 80 patients were personally welcomed by the volunteers and hospital staff and were treated with fruits, biscuits and chocolates.

Delhi Branch

Finday at the Millennium School Noida



60 childhood cancer patients were invited by the Millennium School Noida for a Fun-Day celebration in their school premises on 29 January. The patients were treated to a musical entertainment program put together by the school children. One of the survivors too joined in the festivities with a Punjabi dance performance. The patients had a wonderful time interacting with other kids their age.

Children from St. Mary School, Delhi were invited for the Republic Day celebration at the AIIMS Pediatric ward on 27 January. The children sang patriotic songs and presented a skit for the cancer patients.
