CPAA's
Anita Peter (Director Insurance Policy) and Neeta More (Director
Diagnostic Services) attended UICC's Capacity building workshop in
Singapore from 2-4 November '09. The workshop highlighted on the
evidence based, population focused Cancer prevention program and had the
capacity to shape population behavior change to reduce the risk of
cancer in latter stage. The workshop was aimed at strengthening the
NGO's capacity to plan and deliver effective cancer prevention programs.
CPAA
hosted Citi Bank’s City Global Community Day on 7th November ’09
at our Mahalaxmi centre. 20 of our young patients and parents joined
patients from various other NGOs for this event. Jugglers, magicians,
games, gifts and the yummy snacks kept these children entertained
throughout the evening.
The National Consultation Meet on Tobacco Control was held on
10th November ’09 at Indian Habitat Centre, New Delhi. A follow-up to
the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health held in Mumbai earlier in
March ’09, this meet was graced by the presence of Dr. Dinesh Trivedi
(Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare). Leading tobacco
control stakeholders were invited to discuss the way forward for health
and tobacco control initiatives in India. Dr Shital Raval presented
CPAA's role in Tobacco Control in India.
Prince Aly Khan Hospital’s Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic organised
a day trip to for its volunteers to Cipla's Palliative Training
center near Pune on 26th November ’09. CPAA’s Dr. Shital Raval and
Alison Macdonald were invited to attend this trip which included a
lecture by Cipla’s team on palliative care followed by a tour of the

Dr. Shital Raval, Rupali Dalvi and Alison Macdonald attended the 1st
lecture of Cancer Foundation of India (CFI) held on 3rd December
’09 at the National Library in Kolkata. The chief speaker of the lecture
was Mr. Harald zur Hausen, a Nobel Laureate (2008), for his
discovery of the Human Papilloma virus (HPV), the causative agents of
cervical cancer. He spoke about the role of infectious agents as
causative agents in many common cancers.
Children’s Day was celebrated by the Ladies wing of State Bank of
India (SBI) at their Bandra Kurla complex, Mumbai on 12th December
2009. There was singing, dancing, games and a magic show for the 60
children and their parents. They were given also gifts personally by the
chairman of SBI, Mr. O.P. Bhatt.
CPAA and Prernaa organized an Open Forum on breast cancer during
which they also released the informative book, ‘Prernaa’ on 16th
December ’09 at Ravindra Natya Mandir, Mumbai. Mr. Y K Sapru (Chairman
CPAA), Dr. Mandakini Purandare (Gynaecologist), Dr. Vani Parmar
(Onco-surgeon, Tata Memorial Hospital), Mrs. Neeta More (Director,
CPAA), Mr. Viiveck Verma (CEO, Karvy Data Management) and the author of
the book ‘Prernaa’ - Mrs. Prernaa Verma, a long time breast cancer
survivor were the speakers in this forum. Bollywood actress, Dia Mirza
was the chief guest and Ms. Sangeeta Vyas compered the forum.
50 childhood cancer patients and their relatives were hosted by Dr.
Mukund Aparajit of Rosemary & Thyme at a Christmas party held on
21st December 2009. Deepak Punjabi from Golden Swan Country Club
organised the games and Rahul Sachdeva’s band entertained them with
their music. Santa gave away gifts and sweets to all the children who
were treated to a delicious dinner and desert served by Rosemary &
Thyme.
Hotel Novetel invited 15 childhood cancer patients to a
Christmas-cake mixing ritual in October ’09. Subsequently, they were
invited back on 23rd December ’09, for a Christmas party to enjoy
the Christmas cake with Santa. The children thoroughly enjoyed the party
games and the prizes.
Dr. Shital Raval and Alison Macdonald took part in a Christmas
Carnival at the restaurant, Penne, Juhu. CPAA was given a stall at
which a sizeable sum of money was raised through the sale of our Rehab
centre products.
NEWS FROM OUR BRANCHES
On 19th November ’09, CPAA’s New Delhi Branch along with Olive Beach
organised a preview art show of ‘Colors of Life’ in aid of childhood
cancer patients. The event was attended by the renowned fashion designer
Ritu Kumar along with Bhaichand Patel, Geetika Ganju, Sushma Seth,
artist Kanchan Chander, Niladri Paul and Mr. A.D. Singh of Olive Beach.
This year children from Chinmaya School, New Delhi organized the
Christmas program at AIIMS Hospital under the guidance of CPAA,
Delhi. They decorated the pediatric wards with balloons, bells and a
Christmas tree. The school children arranged for sweets, candies,
chocolates, juices and gifts. Two of the students came dressed as Santa
Clause and sang carols. It was an event filled with fun and enjoyed by
all the patients. Modern Bazaar sent freshly baked muffins for all the
children.
