Extend a lifeline:
Free Drugs for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) patients

CPAA's project to make life-saving drugs available to scores of underprivileged Chronic Myeloid Leukemia patients.

India has an estimated 3 lakh Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) patients, with 20,000 added every year. Novartis' Glivec was a miracle cure giving CML patients a 95% survival chance if taken every day. It was priced at a hefty price of Rs. 1.2 lakh per month, while the generic versions of this medicine were available at Rs. 6,000 - Rs. 12,000 per month. Subsequently, Novartis applied for a patent which would make these cheaper generics unavailable to the patients.

About Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

CML is a type of blood cancer. It affects mostly adults in their 40s and 50s. The disease tends to progress more slowly than acute forms of blood cancer. The incidence of CML in India is 4-5 cases per 100,000 population. It constitutes 10% of all cancers Treatment includes targeted therapy and bone marrow transplant. Targeted therapy involves the administration of oral drugs and is given for at least five years. Some patients may need it for a lifetime though.

Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) spear-headed and won a seven year long relentless battle in the Supreme court of India, against this patent, making this only life-saving drug available at an affordable price to scores of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia patients. Know more >>

But CPAA's battle does not end here. There are still several underprivileged cancer patients in India for whom Rs. 6,000 per month is also exorbitant. This fight can come to its logical victory only when the medicine is finally able to reach the patient.

CPAA's Project-CML aims at raising funds to save the lives of 1,000 such patients in the year 2013. The cost of medicine for one patient for a year is Rs. 79,200. You could pledge treatment of 10 patients with a donation of Rs. 7,92,000 or treatment of 20 patients with a donation of Rs. 15,84,000 and so on.

We appeal to you or your organisation to support this project by contributing towards the treatment of as many patients as you can.
